1. WHERE DOES REIKI COME FROM?

The origins of Reiki go back some 2,500 years. It was re-discovered in the 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator. Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word which means Universal Life Energy, describing the energy which is all around and within every living thing.

Since there is no “r” sound in the Japanese language that has an English equivalent, the Japanese pronunciation would be comparable to “Leiki” (Lay-key). In the West, the name of Reiki is used.

2. WHAT EXACTLY IS REIKI?

Reiki is a natural method of healing which balances and adjusts the body’s energy through a gentle laying on of hands in various positions on the body, or we can work above the body without touching. Reiki is not manipulation and is not invasive.

Reiki is a form of spiritual healing. Because we are spiritual beings in a physical body, Reiki works on the whole person to integrate Body, Mind and Spirit. Thus, it works on the Physical, Mental, and Emotional levels as needed and accepted by each person. Wouldn’t you want to have something that addresses your own very specific needs?

3. HOW DO YOU LEARN REIKI?

Reiki can not be learned by simply reading about it. To become a Reiki practitioner, you must be attuned by a Certified Reiki Master.

In the Traditional Usui method of Reiki, the attunement must be done face-to-face. It is this “attunement” which brings the healing energy into the person's being. The person is attuned on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of his being. It requires the person to be physically present as opposed to in absentia.

Let me say I think we all are born with this ability within ourselves, but most of us are unable to tap into and use that energy for healing. Some people are born with that ability and they can use it. We call them natural healers. But for those of us who are not aware of the healing ability freely flowing through us, receiving the Reiki attunement facilitates that flow of healing energy. Any abilities or gifts you have brought into this life time are enhanced by receiving the Reiki attunement.

I have attuned people from 12 years up to 76 years of age. Everyone has been able to receive and use the Reiki energy after their attunements.

4. WHO CAN BECOME A REIKI PRACTITIONER?

Anyone can learn to do Reiki. Reiki pracitioners and therapists are people who have become certified in Reiki by attending classes or trainings given by a qualified and certified Reiki Master.

They are doctors and nurses in shock trauma as well as all other areas of a hospital; midwives; paramedics; ministers in hospice centers; people in government and people in the private business sector; teachers; artists; and Black Belt Hopkido students and students in other martial art forms. In other words, people like you and me. There is no pre-requisite to learn Reiki, only a willingness.

People learn Reiki for a variety of reasons and most do not set up a private practice. Some will choose to work with people, others with animals or plants. The reasons for taking Reiki are as individual as the people themselves.

But everyone who learns Reiki can also give Reiki to themselves. Thus it is a method for health maintenance and prevention.

5. WHAT ARE THE USES OF REIKI?

The Reiki always assists the area of greatest need within each person and directs the energy to go where needed. Therefore, its use is very individual. In each person, Reiki will work on the physical, emotional, and mental levels to bring body, mind and spirit into balance. Reiki does not impose healing on others, rather it helps each person to help heal himself.

This means on a Physical Level, Reiki works on the Muscular-Skeletal System, the Circulatory System, the Nervous System, the Immune System and all of the internal organs. On the Emotional Level, Reiki works to balance and release stress, anxiety, tension, and forms of depression. Reiki works on the Mental Level by helping to integrate the right and left hemispheres of the brain and improve mental clarity and focus of concentration.

For example, if a person has acute pain, Reiki will focus on the physical level. On a person with a chronic condition, Reiki will work on both the physical and emotional level. For a person experiencing forms of depression or anxiety, Reiki will work on the physical, mental and emotional levels as needed.

Reiki also:

  • Helps maintain the body’s wellness
  • Can be an effective tool in chronic pain relief
  • Helps lower blood pressure
  • Reduces stress/anxiety
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Enhances other medical/healing methods
  • Can minimize side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, etc.
  • Will not interfere with any prescribed medication or medical treatment
  • Can be learned by anyone to aid their own healing or give to others
  • And the list goes on. . .

6. WHAT IS A REIKI TREATMENT & HOW IS IT GIVEN?

For a private office setting, the person receiving a treatment lays on a massage table fully clothed. The Reiki energy can easily and effectively flow through a layer of clothing or bed sheets. It is a light gentle touch, in fact we can work above the body without touching the individual. Reiki treatment is non-invasive and there is no manipulation. A full treatment with a Reiki therapist usually lasts about one hour. Many times the cause or origin may not be at the place the person is experiencing the discomfort of pain.

In a hospital setting, the person will be in normal hospital attire. Reiki can be given before, during and after surgery, to someone giving birth and at any appropiate time during the hospital stay. It will not interfere with any treatment given. Reiki can also be given to a person sitting in a chair or wheelchair. The Reiki therapist will adapt to the setting and situation.

Remember: Reiki can be given for as little as 5 minutes directly on the problem area. Although it isn’t a full “treatment,” Mrs. Takata always said, “Some Reiki is better than none!”

7. WHAT IS A REIKI MASTER?

Since I am a Reiki Master and have been practicing Reiki for 15 years, let me share what it means to me. The term Reiki Master is a title given to someone who has studied and achieved a level of training and experience and has been certified to be a Reiki Teacher.

I am a Traditional Usui Reiki Master trained in Reiki as was passed down by Dr. Usui. As such, I hold as a sacred trust that the attunements I give will be given exactly as has been handed down from Dr. Usui. Thus I help retain the integrity of the traditional Reiki flowing through the lineage of Mrs. Takata who brought Reiki to the West.

I believe that mastery is ongoing. Each day from every person I work on, I continue to learn and grow and improve my craft. So a piece of paper doesn’t confer ultimate mastery, but it does signify a level of training, achievement, dedication and respect for what I do and who I am. You see, I don’t just do Reiki. Reiki is a part of who I am.

In the East the word master is comparable to sensei or teacher. I have no problem with any one calling me a Reiki teacher.

If you are looking for a Reiki Master or Teacher, I suggest you ask them whatever questions you may think of including how long they have been practicing Reiki, what method of Reiki they use, and who was their teacher. When you give yourself the gift of learning Reiki, it is a gift you will have the rest of your life. Therefore, you may want to talk to various Reiki Masters to help you decide upon which Reiki Master is compatible, who resonates with you and who you will entrust to lead you on this Reiki Journey. It is a journey worth taking.
